Precious Gemstones-Sapphire, Ruby, Diamond, and Emerald. All others are considered semi-precious gemstones. These precious gemstones are not used in Gilded Beader creations. However, the terms used with crystal beads mirror these terms due to the colors used that mirror precious gemstones.
Semi-precious-Agate, Amber, Coral, Hematite, Howlite, Jasper, Lapis, Onyx, Turquoise, Quartz, Rhodonite, Rose Quartz, Sodalite, Tiger’s Eye, among others. Some of these are used in Gilded Beader creations.
These beads are individually hand crafted from glass. The term, Venetian Bead denotes a very high level of craftsmanship. Murano is one of the brands used in Gilded Beader LLC jewelry.
Lampwork beads are hand-made by melting narrow rods of glass over an open flame. A thin metal rod, a mandrel, is used to wrap the melting glass around, which later becomes the hole through the bead. Some affects include dots or “bumps” or swirling colors to create attractive beads for jewelry.
Crystal is created by adding lead to glass. This makes crystal sparkle more than regular glass. The more lead, the higher quality and heavier and stronger the bead.
- Swarovski crystals are based in Austria. They are widely considered the highest quality crystal glass beads due to the highest levels of lead included in the beads.
- Swarovski pearls are crystals formed into the shape of pearls. They come in many stunning colors!
Czech glass beads were created in the Czech Republic and are great additions to jewelry making.
A ceramic material made from firing clay at very high temperatures (~1300 Celcius) so the silicate present in clay turns to glass, giving porcelain its characteristic strength and translucence.
